| |  Research partnerships with the global South – A paradigm shift for Swiss research policy and development cooperation?
Tuesday, 4 June 2013, 5 pm – 7:30 pm, University of Bern, UniS, Room 003.
At the programme’s final policy event, politicians and researchers commented on the potential of North-South research networks and discussed the role of politics vis-à-vis successful development cooperation.
Programme participants highlighted how co-production of knowledge contributes to improving the environment and people's lives, and how Switzerland has a key role to play based on its comparatively high educational capital and established links with the global South.

| |  Coping with teenage pregnancy and childbirth in Ghana
Adolescence is when many young people first experiment with sex, but lack the knowledge and resources they need to avoid unwanted pregnancy. Pregnancy can be risky for adolescent girls: it can cause health problems and even death for both the mother and child. Pregnant girls may drop out of school, be rejected by their families, or be spurned by society. But this issue of evidence for policy reveals the resilience of adolescent girls: their ability to avoid unwanted pregnancy, or to deal with the situation and with motherhood if they do become pregnant.

| |  Adapting to climate change through sustainable land management
Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan are very vulnerable to climate change risks. Their widely degraded landscapes are unprepared for changes in precipitation patterns and increasing extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall, cold spells, and heat waves. Implementing sustainable land management (SLM) practices will ensure that land is healthy and less vulnerable to climate extremes. Even though good SLM practices suited to conditions in Central Asia exist, they are not widely applied. This policy brief outlines the SLM resources available for use in adapting to climate change here.

The latest newsletter highlights NCCR North-South activities in the Horn of Africa. Research in the region has focused on environmental degradation, conflict, and infectious diseases. The resulting data is enabling better monitoring and steering of resource use, improved understanding of conflict resolution, and enhanced health interventions.

Research Fair: Results and Innovations from Transnational Research Partnerships
The Commission for Research Partnerships with Developing Countries (KFPE) will be holding a research fair on “Results and Innovations from Transnational Research Partnerships” on 5 June 2013 in Bern. The fair will promote mutual learning by bringing together researchers and practitioners involved in international cooperation to present, share, and discuss promising and innovative results, processes, and products from research partnerships with developing countries. A wide range of academic disciplines will be represented. Submit proposals by 30 March 2013.

KOFF-South Sudan roundtable on water and land management in South Sudan: How to support conflict prevention and peacebuilding?
Taking place on 2 April 2013, 10:00 am to 5:30 pm at swisspeace, Sonnenbergstrasse 17, 3000 Bern 7: Various Swiss development and peacebuilding organisations are involved in water- and land-management projects in South Sudan. Successful implementation of these projects demands superior skills in conflict-sensitive project management, as issues of access to water and land are highly charged. This KOFF workshop aims to facilitate exchange and provide guidance.

| |  Changing times, changing places: AIDS orphans in Kisumu District, Kenya
In Kenya, little is known of the geography of HIV and AIDS at the subpopulation level, particularly spatial and temporal variations and patterns in prevalence of related orphanhood. Although Kenya has strategic plans and policies in place for prevention and management of HIV/AIDS, it has no policy on orphan care. This has resulted in insufficient care and considerable movement of orphans around the country. Understanding these changing patterns of distribution of orphans at the subpopulation level is critical for policymaking and effective use of resources for orphan care.

| |  Making co-management work in protected areas with indigenous peoples in Bolivia and Peru
Sustainable and equitable management of biodiversity in protected areas inhabited by indigenous peoples is often a challenge. It requires an intercultural dialogue based on local norms of resource use and indigenous knowledge. Economic incentives to preserve biodiversity must be able to compete with income from illegal activities such as logging, mining, and land trafficking. And, as this regional policy brief shows, special care is required to ensure that regulations and policies on conservation and resource extraction do not overlap and contradict each other.

| |  Threats and opportunities for smallholders in rural development
Rural development and smallholders’ livelihoods are attracting renewed attention because of concerns over climate change. But other trends will have an even bigger effect on them in the near term: rising food prices due to changing consumption patterns and speculation, increasing food insecurity, and rapid economic growth in big developing countries. In addition, biofuels compete with other crops for land, and large-scale investors, often foreigners, are investing in agricultural land in developing countries. This policy brief highlights the risks and possibilities for smallholders to harness these trends.
